She Was and She Is

by Zamounde Allie

All I got on mind is you
Beautiful sista' with an attitude
Step on in with me
"Whose your mama's cousin?"
While she took a second to reflect
In the shower I stood erect
Memories runnin' down with the water
And a tear or two
I just thought of a tragic love episode
'Cause you are a mirror of a girl I once knew
She loved me when I was poor and without a clue
She was from my mama's side cousin's crew
I fell in with her one day while passin' through
Neva' went back home until the whistle blew
I dis' her 'cause she was found to be my cousin
Family reunion exposed the truth to us
But about breakin' up she wasn't
I looked into her eyes and I knew
She would never forgive me for the lovin'
Had to get fake and tough
To let her go wasn't easy
I cried a whole storm of tears
Why did love hurt so bad over so many years
Ran away from the Bar-B-Q with charred-broiled fears
That I might just still be in love with her
And I am
I'd just forgot until you walked in
All I got on my mind is you
And that's why I'd asked you
Whose your mama's cousin?

Based on a true story of a Canadian love affair
