hanging on street corners and playgrounds panhandling
for more respectable conditions and yet
consistently perpetuating broken households and societal misconceptions
why is it US
knowingly and unknowingly contributing to
immune deficiency by illicit sexual deviancy
illegally mastering pharmaceutical distribution
without a degree to pursue corrupted entrepreneurship
why is it US
eternally awaiting reparations without the realization that we too owned slaves

renouncing the respect earned by forefathers and mothers
renaming queens and goddesses after garden tools and female canines

depleting brain cells with self-medication
and accepting usage of a language created to make its users sound like buffoons

adapting to an incarceration-fashion sense with no knowledge of it's meaning

complaining about unjust situations with no REAL hope of elevation?

genocidal soldiers under subliminal government instruction to exterminate each other
blinded by delusions of bling
divided and wayward

referring to one another as niggas -
a form of the same word that brought pain and degradation
to our fathers and mothers
why don't we remember
black love and self-affirmations
when we were strong determined predestined for greatness
capable of unitizing and organizing movements
and walk-outs and protests for equal rights
and when we were bad enough to use fists not guns to fight
why don't we remember
when black was beautiful BEFORE she got her hair permed
and when love was love regardless of skin tones
when next door neighbors knew and looked out for each other
and were referred to as sister or brother and showed concern when one was in need
why
don't we remember
when upward mentality propagated upward mobility
perhaps if we remembered
we'd be able to reverse the predicament we're in
