I Don't Know

by Shani Cruz

(to all the men I tried to love)

No one understands
why I love the way I do
I forget about the
white supremacists
down the road or the
churches burnt in the south
Men under 25
think
one woman ties you down
It's a common fact nowadays
Pants dropped in seconds
The symbol of manhood?
Baby you can show you
care with your hands
on a book instead
of my soft pixie legs
with sugar pouring
in the center
I know it's addictive
but you can resist it
Especially when you
know you don't love me
Even through my tears
you never had the heart
to say
I'm confused
But if you really are
I don't know
I've grown accustomed
to nothingness
This unrequited love
must end
Did I make you crazy too?
I don't know
If we knew more
and you were a complete man
Would we be smiling
instead of denying our relevance
Or did we ever exist
I don't know
I won't ever know
