Tribute To Our Parents

by Roye Augustine

When we were but small children
Running in and out the cotton fields,
Innocent, carefree and gay--
Yet knowing life was real,
Guided by a force unknown at the time to you and me
Nourished and cultivated by parents we could see
Parents who did not believe in the word “lack”
Who possessed the tenacity to give no slack
Because they desired better things for us
Than the cotton sack
They dreamed of the exchange for a Cadillac
They labored physically, endured patiently and prayerfully on their knees
And held the trigger of hope for us with a tight squeeze
The grip they never let go, as they persuaded us
To go up and down the cotton row
God’s promise they kept utmost in their minds
They paid little attention to our whines
They kept us reaching up and looking ahead,
Working hard and being thankful for our daily bread
They possessed that knowing knack
That we could go from sack to Cadillac
We packed that cotton on our backs
We stuffed all we could in those sacks
Eagerly, we worked hard all day everyday
We never thought too much about pay
We always knew that there would be a brighter day
So come let us praise the Lord
As we glance back with tact
He brought us from the cotton sack
To the bright shiny Cadillac

Let’s synchronize with the Lord today
Lift Him up, hold Him high
Thank Him for a share of His pie
For it is His rich blessings, we now enjoy
