Rocky Places

by Nigel S. Daring

Floating beyond heaven’s shadows, it landed amongst us
Serene, wise, it spoke of a time long lost in rock
Somehow it needed moment
It spoke of water in stone
We could not believe

It assured us there was much to discover
In the hardness, what could be found?
Pebbles, broken dreams, hopeless expectations,
Writings of ancient times, ancient memories of a lost truth
But the truth itself never there

It spoke confidently
If not the reality, the confidence could be believed
Cued by promises, many of us proceeded to dig
With determined picks, there was much digging through the night
A few claimed to have found it,
though somehow the others could not perceive to verify
The softness, the flow
Belief eluded most, for all that could be found was the hardness

The declaration of freedom, the moment
It was leaving, knowing it brought peace, returned the lost sheep
“Drink of the living water and you shall never thirst again”
It left
