my dear sweet brothas,
I will never fully understand exactly
how it feels to be a black man
but I understand that you are in pain
and I know you're tired of being misrepresented
never being seen, and seldom heard ,baby I know.
I know you're not all criminals, or athletes,
nor pimp, nor player, nor dog
you may not be wearing Sean Jean or Fubu or have a degree
but I know that doesn't make you any less intelligent than the next man
brotha I know that you're tired of being misrepresented
I know you care for your family sometimes doing things you'd rather not do
to see to it that your family has food
and I know its hard to keep your head up with the world on your shoulders
I know that you're fed up
tired of getting blamed for the things that you didn't do
or not getting credit for the things that you did
being blamed for being you, blamed for being black
folks crossing the street when you cross their paths
beating you down and telling you to get up
what can I do to tell you I see you brotha
regardless of what you did or didn't do
I know what's going on my eyes are open ,
I hear you brotha
I know that you're hurting and frustrated and fed up
my ears are open , I feel u brotha, I know you're in pain
but remember, I was there.
I'm your mother, sister, wife, daughter, and friend
and my arms are open.
I know you're tired of being misrepresented
people only open their eyes to see what they want to
but I know that there's more to you
so do you
my brothas they have you in a box labeled by a dictionary definition
that black equals dark and evil
step out the box labeled: criminal, drug dealer, liar, black,
violent, murderer, gangster, black
materialistic, uneducated, disrespectful, black,
step out the box, my caring, lovable, intelligent
sensitive, giving, talented, wonderful, honest, kind, generous,
beautiful black brothas
baby I know.
just step out the box
and represent!
