In Black In Light

by Tracy Mckever

What is this thing about dark and light skin?
Regardless of the complexion we are all Africans.

Ebony Queen, Heavenly Honey, Pecan Tan, and Vanilla Light;
Although we come in many shades we are still Black
 to someone who is White.

What's this thing about good and bad hair?
All hair is considered good if you have some there.

What's this thing about dark is out and light is in?
I think you need to check it again.
My sister of a darker skin can I get a Amen?

What is this I hear you're oppressing your own;
All because the shade of skin tone?

Who's to say that light is better than dark, or that
dark is better than light?
Who's to say that dark is wrong and that light is right?

If I choose dark and you choose light that's called preference,
there is no best between the two; It's just that I prefer the darker
and you prefer the lighter hue.

So my sister of different shades there is no wrong or right;
Because the issue isn't between better and worse, it's as
plain as black and light.
