Welfare Recipient

by Vanessa J. Kyles

Why ya’ll messin’ with me
While I’m stressing with livin’
Don’t want no handout
But if it’s all they got, then I’ll stand in that long line
And get what’s mine
I just want to be free,
Exceed without the need of a system,
That’s got me with a blue sign with a wheel chair on it,
Hell I can walk, I can get up and move on….but not now
But you’re thinking I’m a sell-out, not trying to bail out
I’m just trying to keep my baby fed up,
And when he’s sick, his doctors’ bills are paid up.
You see, the system may be tying me down;
Got me depending on its income
Subjecting a sista to lack of self esteem
Neglecting to follow a bigga dream
But the truth is, here is now, and now is here
Reality is the key to my need
So you don’t know me, Hell don’t judge me,
If anything, show that you care of my disposition
And respect my position of just existing
