Beyond These Big Brown Eyes

by Vanessa J. Kyles

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll see wooded areas, plantation homes, mammies and masters

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll hear auctions of big black beauties, priced bottom dollar
Chains ring like horrid chimes

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll hear lil' girls wailing as nappiness is platted
Lil' boys playin tag, just before supper

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll hear whispered prayers led and said, in unison
"Thank God for what lil' we have", asking, "when will it all end"

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll hear bed pieces squeak
A one-sided satisfaction complete
Now everyone's asleep

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll see the scars engraved in his back
And hear cries that bear no mercy

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll see white fields of fluffiness
Hard labor is grasping at my knees and back
But I've gotta keep on pickin'

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll feel the extreme tightening of a rope
as a whip skims a horse to flee

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll hear speeches about having some sort of dream

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll hear the cracklin' of flames
As white fabrics speak words of hatred

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll only imagine the sound of an explosion
As it enters flesh, terminating great leaders

Beyond these big brown eyes
You'll see a mentality, much different from our fore-time
Simply because I, personally can not relate

But I feel it all up in my bone
To strive for a black unity
The gut wrenching legacy of our heritage, is marked
The seed has been planted
The roots intertwine very deep, my people

Just "knowing" is power
We have come a long way
Yet we have far to go
