Conversation With Langston Hughes

by Katisha Burt

I had lunch with Langston Hughes
He told me to stop deferring my dreams
With life similar to a raisin in the sun
Forces come to have you struggle
Before knowing what it means
I told Langston I was feeling The Weary Blues
Climbing endless hills
Seeing problems in two's
He said if I've known rivers
Like he's know rivers
I'd know the problems our ancestors knew
The message in Mother to Son
was given to me now you
Honored and graciously taken
Through historic communication
I be no longer debatin'
The dreams I can awaken
