The African Night Witch

by Alicia Karen Elkins

Baloi ba bosigo,
        the African night witch
                that causes such fear.
No walls, locked doors,
        or windows can keep
                her intended victim safe.
She exhumes freshly
        buried bodies, taking
                body parts for her spells,
without any digging.
Her magic is so powerful, she
makes them float to the surface!
She makes hyenas
        from porridge; rides on their
back, a foot dragging the ground.
Her familiar is an
        owl, often perched on
                her shoulder, awaiting command.
These elderly women
        always travel in groups,
                summoning their nocturnal brood.
They strip off their
        clothes, covering their bodies
with ashes or blood of the dead.
Then, they travel the
        countryside casting their evil
                on innocent sleeping victims.
They quickly make a
        cut and insert a stone
or piece of flesh from the dead.
If the victim
        does not seek a cure,
                they will certainly die.
Anyone can become
        a baloi ba bosigo
                by passing a simple test;
to prove their desire
they must kill a close relative,
                preferably a young firstborn child.
