Alvin S. Bynum is Dean Emeritus of the University Division at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. He has served for nearly forty years in education--including experiences in Pre-School, Job Corps, State Government service, private and public university administration and academic counseling. Dean Bynum is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Sociology, and of Afro-American Studies. He teaches courses in both departments at IUPUI. Dean Bynum facilitates workshops and seminars for high school and college academic counselors and administrators seeking help in the recruitment and retention of black students. In addition, Bynum has presented programs on academic advising at national counseling meetings. He is the author of Black Student/White Counselor: Developing Effective Relationships.
A native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a graduate of Dillard University in Sociology, Bynum had additional study at Indiana University and Northwestern University Graduate Schools, and holds a Master of Science in Education (Counseling) from Butler University, and received a Doctor of Humanities degree from Marian College in Indianapolis.
For twenty-three years he directed a group of professionals at IUPUI in the academic counseling of several thousand undergraduates. Bynum is a Life Member of the IUPUI Black Student Union and has received "The Advocate of The Dream Award" from the BSU.
Bynum is an active community volunteer with several local social agencies and is Trustee Emeritus of Marian College in Indianapolis. He is a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, where he is a lay Minister of the Eucharist. Other organization memberships include, The Indianapolis Literary Club, The Langston Hughes Society, The Indianapolis Urban League, NAACP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Rotary International (Paul Harris Fellow), and the Indianapolis Museum of where he is a Docent. Bynum, a veteran of WW II, and his wife Marie have two grown daughters. They live in Indianapolis.
