Feelin' Real Black

by B.T. Bonner

I was feeling real black today
As I walked down the city streets
Tapping my fingers to the beat
I passed by a house with a man out front
Drinking on his wine and getting drunk
I say hey ole' timer what's new?
He looked back at me and said ...You
I turned with a smile and continued my stride
Then a brother from my block pulled up in his ride
Chromed out wheels with a gun at his side
He said hey black man what's to it?
I said brother you got a gun, you must be goin' through it!
He said I'm just a black man trying to survive
Protecting my family and protecting my ride
I said brother who is the enemy that you fear?
He said shit, any brother trying to roll up from the rear
I said if you fear that man then he ain't your brother
Why don't you try to love one another?
He said man go on with that, what makes you so right
I said brother I walk these streets every night
Fearing nothing but God and his infinite might
He said peace out black man I gotta jet
He rolled up his window and away he went
As I turned to walk away I heard some shots
Sounded like they were coming from up the block
I turned and ran to the corner and before my eyes
The same brother in the ride, now paralyzed
He looked up at me and said please help me now
I said turn to your Master and he will show you how
He said brother why did this happen to me instead of you?
I said brother I was sent down here to help you
I fell to my knees wrapped my arms around my brother man
I said if you believe in God please take my hand
Our hands joined together and together we flew
You see your brother man could be the angel looking out for you
